A Better Together Wedding At The Westin Columbus
Better together = worth the wait. A Westin Columbus REception
Cody and Lauren originally had their wedding booked for 2020. But I think we all know what happened with that. But this wedding - that was Perfect Together - was SO worth the wait. It was one giant party from the start, and we LOVE this type of weddings.
I could start off by pointing out some of the unique features of this wedding, but the main thing was HOW GREAT OF A PARTY IT WAS!
Westin Columbus Wedding

"Marry Me" - Train
Father-Daughter Song:
"Your Song" - Elton John
Groom-Mother Song:
"Because You Loved Me" - C. Dion
Seriously, when you have guests screaming during the introduction, its a pretty good clue its going to be a fun night. When the guests start dancing from the first song, its another good clue. When the dance floor is full at the end of the night and you have lots of great songs still to play…you wish you could play for another hour!
They had a really long table for the bride and groom and their wedding party. It probably went the 2/3 of the length of the ballroom! Buckeye Sounds Entertainment does a lot of weddings at The Westin, but I don’t think I’ve seen that too many times in the past. But as always, the ballroom looked incredible. The flowers on the table really enhanced the look of the ballroom.
They had their cocktail hour in the ballroom, with a pianist playing the grand piano. Normally, you have your cocktail hour in the foyer but the hotel had a few high tables on the dance floor to enjoy the ambiance.
So let me give you some insight on playing music at wedding receptions that I’ve learned the past few years. I think I have a pretty good idea what will ‘work’ at a wedding, and what won’t. But my main goal is to play as many of the bride and groom’s favorite songs as possible!
But there are times when I am COMPLETELY WRONG. And that was the case at this wedding.
You see the bride and groom had the song “Fat Bottomed Girls” by Queen on their must play list. Even though the dance floor had been packed most of the night, i was SURE this was going to clear the dance floor. I played this song almost as a throw away song and would have to re-build the dance floor again.
From the opening seconds of the song (Ooooohhh you gonna take me home tonight. Ooooohhh down beside that red fire light), this crowd was singing the song as loud as they could. It went over SO much better that I thought it would. It just goes to show, even experienced DJs can still misread a crowd and how they will react to a song. I’m not too proud to admit that!!
And that’s pretty much how it went for the rest of the evening. Packed dance floor. The bride and groom did such a GREAT job of selecting the music for their guests that they danced and sang until the VERY end of the night.
As a wedding DJ, I can’t tell you how much I enjoy this.
